When Islam Is a Religion

Islam is a deen, which means a law, not a religion anyone can embrace or interpret however they please. How can the law of Abraham reasonably be defined by gentiles who occupy his land and make rules for his sons? The fact nobody on this panel speaks for the sons of Abraham automatically refutes their position, which is akin to ISIS.

While ISIS is on the radical right (using American politics as a reference) Asma’s on the radical left. ISIS calls murdering Muslims jihad. Asma, on the other hand, endorses the following article: I Am Muslim and I Chose to Have an Abortion, which calls abortion jihad. Yet, the Prophet considers coitus interruptusa fortiori abortion–like burying an infant (Bulugh al-Maram 8:1033). He also considers infanticide like murdering a slave (Tirmidhi 16:26). In short, Asma endorses her own creative interpretation of jihad to murder innocent infants, whereas ISIS endorses its own creative interpretation of jihad to murder innocent people. What’s the difference?

Both sides refuse to acknowledge Alids’ authority on and possession of the Qur’an, despite the clear text of the Qur’an and Hadith (v. 4:54 & Riyad as-Salihin 1:346). My response to these parties is that if they don’t like Alids, they can make up their own Qur’an (v. 2:23) and act in their name and their ancestors’, according to their own law, in their own land.
